Film clip: Clueless

Representation - In the film Clueless, we see a variety of teenagers represented in different ways. Firstly, there is Cher who is selfish and a snob. Secondly, there is Dionne who only cares about boys and fashion. Thirdly Tai is the new girl in school, she is naive and "Clueless" with her social and fashion life as well as being interested in drugs. In addition, Travis is also a dope head and he is in love with Tai. Finally, Josh is Cher’s ex stepbrother. However, he is nothing like her, he is dedicated to his studies and concerned for the environment. On top of that, he is politically aware and gives respect to his ex-step dad. The film is about teenager's relationships and their constant battle against authority. The film is set in a rich part of Beverley hills in California. The opening credits are set to draw the viewer into the film. The colours are bold whilst teenagers are shown doing reckless things such as when they’re in the car driving as if it is a game.

Imperial dreams (2014)

Representation – I think it represents poverty and the working class. It shows poverty and the realistic living conditions that people live in as well as ethnicity and how it’s set in a black neighborhood.
Messages and values – it challenges stereotypes and shows the hope outside of prison for convicts. It shows that life is real and not a fairy-tale and the determination you need to keep pushing forward and try and all your dreams will come true.
Genre – drama, social realism.
Narrative – reconnecting with son – linear.

Theme –

·         redemption
·         Struggle
·         Homeless
·         Family

Style – verisimilitude – very close to reality
The narration at the beginning allows the audience to reflect and look at the surroundings and the conditions in which he is forced to live in.
He hides his car keys in the car and stores his books – this shows the value in the things he possesses.
He walks into his house with his mother laying on the living room floor, passed out and intoxicated with substance.
He greets his son and his son runs into the bedroom and then they hug – this shows the hidden emotion of affection and shows their real longing for each other when he returns from prison. Soon after they are sitting at the table in the evening and his son is eating some cereal – the juxtapose in what the child is eating reflects the lack of money they may have because cereal is a cheap meal to have and only requires milk and in this instance, it was probably the only food which they has in the house. In the house, there is a cabinet with several bottles of alcohol placed on it and this priorities the supplies which they think are most important in the house – they don’t have real of nutritious food but they have plenty of alcohol and beverages to choose from.  Bambi’s uncle comes into the scene and gives Bambi a tight hug, telling him that he’s grown and looks strong, almost as if he’s sizing him up and seeing if he is bigger and stronger than him. Bambi then asks about his mother and what’s up with her and his uncle responds with a blunt, she’s a grandma she’s going to do whatever she wants as well as look after your son as If that’s acceptable.
When Bambi is seen out with his son we see him holding his hand and looking out for him as his main priority and they go and visit Bambi
